Tribal Celtic Tattoo Designs

by Luke J. Slyvester

When choosing an appropriate tattoo, it is quite common that the tattooist will have an array of tribal tattoo designs upon their wall. These are the stable for any tattoo parlour, as quite often, they are highly likely to be picked, either as an individual tattoo, or as part of the intricate design of a larger tattoo which has been constructed.

So why are tribal tattoo designs so popular? Originally, the Tribal tattoos were used as ways in which you could identify others who belonged to the same tribe as yourself. The tattoos different between each tribe, and so you could see immediately who was a member of your tribe, and who was not. These tattoos are still popular - though completely more safely - now with tribes, and with other people alike.

There are other reasons why these tribal tattoo designs were also used, and this is for certain occasions. In some tribes, a right of passage, such as the changing from childhood to adulthood, is marked by a tattoo, showing that they are now man or woman, rather than boy or girl. There are also occasions when these are actually wedding tattoos. Usually, a wedding tattoo will be a tribal style band, which denotes everlasting love and fidelity.

The most popular form of tribal tattoo in today’s society is actually the Celtic tribal tattoo design. Or, to be more specific, the tattoos which were commonly used by druidic practitioners in Celtic tribes.

Obviously, not everyone who now sports a Celtic tribal tattoo design is a druid. But once, these tattoos were steeped in a tradition of magic and ritual. The tattoos were said to have hidden meanings and powers, actually the key to a lot of druidic spells.

Today, the most popular of all these tattoos is the Celtic cross. This is not only popular among those who wish to have a tribal tattoo, but can be chosen as part of religious identification, or tattooed for the memory of another, one who was lost.
