Historically tattoos have been present in most cultures at one time or another. There are beautiful myths and traditions surrounding tattoos and of course some not so pleasant.

While fine art tattoo work has only seen a rebirth since the mid 1980s, it is important to know that in excess of fifty million people bear a tattoo of some sort in the United States. While exact numbers are not available, there is a rapid growth within Europe as well.

A new-wave of people are now starting to brave the needle and show their colors, so to speak. Celebrities, athletes, musicians, and movie stars are getting inked. Granted there are some that you will see, and others that are more private. Lets look at those that bemuse, amuse, and excite us.

An advocate of ink is Lindsay Lohan. While she has a few, one in particular is rather thought provoking, and that is the word breathe in white ink on the inside of her left wrist. A reminder that the most important thing to do is breathe, after that its all good.

Alyssa Milano is another one of our favourite inked celebrities - her tattoos are symbols of what is important in her life, and they have meaning.

Then there is everyones favourite pirate. Johnny Depp is not ashamed to admit that all of his tattoos pay homage to his lifes achievements and destinations that he has visited. This seems quite a tribute to a mans dreams.
